Get ready for Dallas Cowboys free agency part deux
The Dallas Cowboys have been fairly quiet in free agency for the past few years. Instead of big signings, they tend to look for bargains. They want save money to carry forward and hope they hit a home run on a low cost/high reward signing.
The other factor is the Cowboys tend to want compensatory picks (something they lose if they replace every free agent they lose). For these reasons, the Dallas Cowboys have used the post-June 1 cuts as a source for players. They don’t count against the comp pick formula and they usually come cheap.
Let’s look at some of the potential players that COULD be cut and the Dallas Cowboys could pursue to fill some holes. I won’t get into every player, just some of the key ones.
The Dallas Cowboys enter free agency part deux looking to add depth to an unfinished roster.
The biggest name that has floated around the post-June 1 cuts is Eagles guard is Isaac Seumalo. Seumalo is a former third-round pick who has had some injury concerns but performed well when he is healthy. There are still some questions surrounding left guard and Seumalo could help as long as the health holds. He would at least give some snaps while some of the younger guys learn.
Another name being kicked about is Ravens defensive tackle Derek Wolfe. Wolfe is another older player with injury concerns, especially after a back issue derailed his 2022. Prior to injury, Wolfe was a good run defender at the 3 and 5 technique spots. The Cowboys have decided to attack the defensive line with a “by committee” approach, Wolfe could be a cheap addition to the rotation.
Also on the defensive line is end Dee Ford, currently on the 49ers. Ford has been injury-plagued while in San Fransisco and his stellar 2018 season seems to be a thing of the past. However, for a team like Dallas that could use more on the edge rotation, Ford could at least fight for a depth spot. There will likely be more realistic players, but Ford feels like a cheap signing the Dallas Cowboys front office would be willing to try.
On offense one of the names thrown around is Giants wide receiver, Darius Slayton. With the Giants drafting Wan’Dale Robinson, Slayton seems like a possible option to suffer a post-June 1 cut.
Slayton had good seasons in 2019 and 2020 but a really bad 2021 might be enough for the Giants to part ways and save money. With Michael Gallup probably being out for the first few weeks, and James Washington dealing with a foot issue, the Cowboys could look to add to the position.
There could be some surprise names and who the Cowboys decide to cut, or not cut, could dictate how they move. Looking at how the Cowboys approach the off-season, it is hard to think there will be no movement at all. It all starts now, with the post-June 1 cuts.
