Dallas Cowboys Gamble No. 5: WHAT IF THE FRONT OFFICE DOESN’T MICROMANAGE KELLEN MOORE?

Why was head coach Mike McCarthy so reluctant to interject and try to put the offense back on the right track after the team’s clear mid-season struggles last year?

More than a theory, the front office compromised Kellen Moore’s playbook and playcalling. So if you’re the head coach and your own boss has broken the chain of command, what is McCarthy or Moore supposed to do?

This is exactly why a guy like Bill Parcells left and a big issue Jimmy Johnson had as well. This isn’t anything new. As a matter of fact, it’s typical and on brand. But here’s where things get worrisome for, not just 2022, but the foreseeable future.

If the front office didn’t learn in 2021 their way isn’t the best way and they should let their Offensive Coordinator do his job, then they’ll never learn. The contrast couldn’t have been more clear.

Kellen Brought the team hot out of the gate. “Cowboy’s football” from upstairs slowed it down.

Was Moore perfect? No. Some of his concepts were risky and wild. How many lateral attempts after the catch did we see this season? Too many for comfort.

Despite the occasional oddities, Kellen Moore’s body of work was good enough to be left alone. What likely happened was a football traditionalist (Stephen Jones) didn’t like all that fancy-shmancy motion and misdirection hoopla (to put it in curmudgeony football terms) and decided to step in and fix the Cowboys league leading No. 1 offense.

THE MOST LIKELY SCENARIO:

The Joneses do things their way, always. And they do not waver. If they do not like how something is being done, even if it’s working, they will change it.

We can hold out hope there won’t be interference on the football side of things, but we can’t exactly be sure. If Kellen Moore gets to use a healthy Dak Prescott the way he sees fit 2022 is going to be a lot of fun.
