Dennis Smith Jr and Dallas Mavericks reunion in the works?
By Reid Hanson
When the Dallas Mavericks drafted Luka Doncic in 2018, many fans assumed Dennis Smith’s days were numbered in Big D. Both of their respective games were predicated on having the ball in their hands, and the Mavs just committed to Doncic as the cornerstone of their franchise.
DSJ, the top pick the year prior, flashed moments of brilliance as a rookie but never quite reached the consistent heights that were expected of him when the Mavs picked him ninth overall. After 32 games alongside Luka, Dennis Smith Jr. was sent to NYC as part of a package that brought Kristaps Porzingis to Dallas.
It appeared as if the DSJ era in Dallas was over, or so we thought…
Dennis Smith Jr is a free agent and is working out for the Dallas Mavericks along with a variety of other NBA teams
Despite the unceremonious and relatively premature departure from Dallas, there is no ill-will between DSJ and the Dallas Mavericks. It was clear Luka Doncic was an once-in-a-lifetime player from the day he arrived in Dallas. If a player is going to bump you off the roster, it might as well be a superstar like Luka doing it.
DSJ and Dallas have maintained a good relationship since, so a reunion wouldn’t be awkward, but rather somewhat comfortable. And it’s important to point out DSJ’s best season in the NBA was his only full season with the Dallas Mavericks.
A simplified role seems like the best way for Dennis Smith Jr to get his career back on track. The Dallas Mavericks are down a shot creator with Jalen Brunson going to New York. DSJ could help pick up some of that slack Brunson left behind.
With a contact at or near league minimum, he wouldn’t be a risky investment to make. And even if he just plays while Luka’s getting a breather, it’s still a valuable enough role that justifies the roster spot. DSJ may not bring much defensively but neither did Brunson if we’re being honest. His athleticism and ability to create could provide a spark from time to time – which is exactly what the Mavs are looking for.
Is Dennis Smith the difference-maker the Mavs need?
No, but he’s a useful piece who MFFL’s know well from his days in Dallas.

What do you say Mavericks fans? Do you like the idea of a reunion or is this just a case of clinging to the past and a whole lot about nothing?
