Potential cuts on the Dallas Cowboys

Donta Fowler Jr, DE

I’ve been calling this since the day Fowler was signed. After losing Randy Gregory in pretty embarrassing fashion, Stephen Jones needed something to point at in order to stop the PR bleeding. Fowler has name recognition and came ultra-cheap with little guarantees (a sign only the Cowboys wee interested). In fact, the Cowboys can cut him before the season starts and escape most of his contract (an indicator).

As we mentioned before, the competition for snaps outside is significant. Camp has taught us the top two EDGE pass-rushers will be DeMarcus Lawrence and Micah Parsons. When Parsons isn’t rushing (and playing off-ball) Dorance Armstrong will get most of the snaps.

Sam Williams was a handpicked draft selection of Dan Quinn’s. He’s definitely getting snaps. And Chauncey Golston is a bulked up third rounder who locks down the EDGE on running downs. This doesn’t leave much for a veteran to do – especially if Basham makes the team (at least one of them gets cut).

Trysten Hill, DT

Trysten Hill is having the best camp of his career. It also may be too little too late. Gallimore and Diggy are the starters. Bohanna and Ridgeway are the pluggers (who bring the dog mentality the Cowboys keep talking about). Golston can reduce inside as well, giving Dallas 4.5 DTs on the roster.

Can Hill make it? Certainly! Of all the players I have on this potential cut list, Hill is by far the most physically talented. He’s the complete package, he just hasn’t reached that potential and he’s a free agent after the season which impacts his controllability.
