Potential cuts on the Dallas Cowboys

Jeremy Sprinkle, TE

This is a tough call because the Dallas Cowboys clearly see Jeremy Sprinkle as someone I do not. I don’t think he belonged on the roster last year and I don’t think he belongs on the roster this year. The 28-year-old blocking specialist isn’t a very good blocker and has long maxed out his potential.

Rookie Jake Ferguson and third year player Sean McKeon may already be better than him and they’re still developing. Adding in the UDFA Peyton Hendershot, and you have three developmental TEs that could greatly use the snaps Sprinkle is getting. He’s a progress stopper in a season the Dallas Cowboys are clearly focused on developing players.

Honorable mention: Cooper Rush, QB

Whenever I discuss Cooper Rush’s job security in 2022, I always bring up Garrett Gilbert. Why? Because last season Gilbert was seen as a virtually lock to win the QB2 job, and last season he was cut before the season ever began.

Like Gilbert, Rush is resting on his laurels of 2021. He had one great game (it really was) but hasn’t been able to repeat the results in the slightest in 2022. If Will Grier can continue to outperform Rush and bump him as Dak Prescott’s top back-up, Rush could be cut completely – Especially if Ben DiNucci continues to show improvement as a developmental practice squad player (keeping things in perspective though, DiNucci is not even close to as good as Rush).

Training camp and preseason still mean a lot. It’s not just about rookies and young guys – it’s also vital for some veterans. We’ll see how this all shakes out but there’s no time to waste for these five.
