Dallas Cowboys Breakouts: Dorance Armstrong, DE

When the Dallas Cowboys lost Randy Gregory in pretty embarrassing fashion last March, they scrambled to save face. Gregory ditched them at the alter and they needed to find a consolation prize – fast.

Dorance Armstrong was that consolation.

All Dorance has done is produce big play after big play. He’s making sacks, stripping the ball, and even blocking kicks. He’s doing it all and is unquestionably in the midst of a breakout season in Dallas.

With four sacks, Armstrong only trails Micah Parsons on the Dallas Cowboys. In fact, Armstrong is one of the most double-teamed defensive ends in the NFL this year.

Armstrong is a well-rounded DE who plays the run and the pass with equal respect. He’s one of the few who play special teams as well, which just adds to his overall value. At age 25, Armstrong is abnormally young for a fifth year player, which explains his late breakout. Luckily for Dallas, they signed him to a two-year $12 million deal before this breakout season happened.

We can’t praise the Dallas front office for keeping Armstrong, per say, because they wanted to sign Randy Gregory instead. But we can appreciate their ability to scramble and get this deal done because they might have backed into a better situation than what they originally attempted.

Osa Odighizuwa, DT

Osa has been close for some time now. Last week in LA he officially stepped over the edge and made his first move towards breaking out for the Dallas Cowboys.

Odighizuwa, or “Diggy”, is Dallas’ top interior pass rusher. He has explosion and technique no one else possesses and can work games/stunts with the DEs, to perfection. The second year DT out of UCLA can play a variety of roles and assignments on Dan Quinn’s defense and only stands to improve as the season goes on.
