Cowboys Defensive Coordinator replacement No. 4: Secondary leads Joe Whitt, Jr/Al Harris

To be quite honest, this is probably the ideal option for the Dallas Cowboys. You have in-house choices that can provide continuity for the defensive personnel that is already in place. This may be all for nothing as both gentlemen may follow Dan Quinn to Denver to take over Defensive Coordinator and Secondary coaching jobs. However, the Cowboys probably have a solid chance of snagging at least one of them.

The transformation of Trevon Diggs alone upon the arrival of Al Harris is enough to garner consideration. Al Harris, in his playing days, gambled quite a bit on the field and while Cowboy fans will scream at the TV when Diggs jumps on a route, there were times when interceptions were far and few in between.

Joe Whitt, Jr. is due his opportunity to lead a defensive unit. Last offseason, the Pittsburgh Steelers thought enough of him to try and poach him from Dallas. The Baltimore Ravens were right there as well. He is the behind-the-scenes engineer working his magic while Dan gets the fanfare.

The Dallas Cowboys will continue to be in this position as long as they continue to have offensive and/or defensive success. They have options to fill them soon to be open defensive coordinator job. They will definitely have to make the right decision. While their star defensive players (Parson, Diggs and Lawrence) have long careers ahead of them, one misstep in the coaching hire can set their careers back.
