Dallas Cowboys Round Four (Comp Pick – Randy Gregory) – Mekhi Garner – Cornerback – LSU

In round five the Cowboys comeback around to double-dip selecting their second cornerback of the draft. After this season where injuries and inconsistent play decimated the Cowboys, they solidify the position with the selection of Mekhi Garner who transferred from Lafayette to the University of Louisiana in 2022.

Just like Joey Porter in round one, Garner is your stereotypical Dan Quinn prototype, tall-framed and long arms. Garner resembles the Porter pick in many ways standing at 6’2″ but weights in at the 100th percentile for cornerbacks at 220 lbs. He has the size but the straight-line speed to match to turn and chase down opposing receivers. With his tall-frame and size, Garner has the length and ability to go up with receivers in 50/50 situations and come down with the ball. He has above average ball skills and willing tackler who would fill in nicely in zone packages or as a rotational piece.

Mekhi Garner may be a DQ prototype but he will need to improve his man coverage skills as he relies greatly on overpowering receivers. In college this may have worked more times than not but the NFL is much faster and the receivers are stronger. If he can refine his technique, Garner has tremendous upside.
