Dallas Cowboys Round Five – Charlie Jones – Wide Receiver – Purdue
Wide receiver depth has already been addressed and the Dallas Cowboys are in desperate need of a third wide receiver with Noah Brown about to leave in free agency. Outside of Lamb there is no one I trust that’s currently on the Dallas Cowboys’ roster. Yes, that includes fan favorite Michael Gallup. With the addition of Jalin Hyatt in round two, Jerry and company come back to the wide receiver and select the former Boilermaker Charlie Jones.
If the Cowboys are looking for a sure handed play maker, Jones is the guy for the job. He is a run-after-catch guru out of the slot. Dallas’ offense excelled most when they had CeeDee Lamb coming out of the slot, so adding another wide out who could be interchanged at the position can only help Dak and this offense. Jones creates space with his release off the lien of scrimmage and often times plays bigger than his actual size when it comes down to going up and making plays in the middle of the field. He won’t beat people down field but he’s a solid route-runner with a competitive mindset and huge run-after-catch ability.
Jones may be a YAC monster but he does lack top-end speed and won’t consistently beat defenders in a footrace. On a team littered with 4.5 speed, Jones may not seem like an ideal prospect but his ability to attack the ball and create yards after the catch are enough to take a gamble on his upside here in the fifth round.
