Cowboys Draft: Anton Harrison OT profile – Why he fits
By Reid Hanson
If the Cowboys want to keep their options open at left tackle because they’re unsure where Tyler Smith, last year’s first round pick, is best suited there, Anton Harrison could be the perfect guy.
Anton Harrison from Oklahoma is a former four-star recruit with an NFL left tackle skillset. While undeveloped at the moment, he could be the answer for Dallas at LT, long-term.
Anton Harrison is someone the Cowboys should keep an eye on in the 2023 NFL Draft because he has left tackle ability.
While the differences between left tackle and right tackle aren’t as great as they once were, left tackles are generally regarded as more athletic and built to handle speed, while right tackle are regarded as more powerful and built to handle strength.
Tyler Smith, the Cowboys current LT, is elite on power, so the old standard isn’t all that applicable for the Cowboys much at the moment. But generally, these positions have a “type” and Will McClay is big into player traits fitting team roles.
Overall, the Cowboys appear rich on power but lacking in finesse. If they want to increase their athleticism and ability to take on speed rushers from wide techniques, Harrison could be the right pick for them.
At 6-foot-6, 310lbs, Harrison fit the prototype at LT, even if he is a little lean at the moment. His frame and room for growth make him a tantalizing prospect with a year of weight training. His skillset is also raw and undeveloped, meaning he has a long way to go before he’s come close to reaching his potential.
Anton Harrison appears to have good arm length and a thick lower. He can get his hands on the rusher and sustain the block, even if he’s not the most powerful tackle on the block. He needs work in multiple areas of technique but can step in from Day 1 if called upon.
Projected Draft Spot: Ranked OT3 by Dane Brugler and OT5 by TDN, Harrison is slated for anywhere from mid-first to bottom-first in the 2023 NFL Draft, putting him directly in the Cowboys range this spring.
Harrison could be the best offensive lineman on the board when the Cowboys pick and could be a long-term answer on their offensive line.
