Dallas Cowboys Round 7 (246): SAF Tyreque Jones, Boise State

The Dallas Cowboys round out the draft with a player from Boise State. If you don’t know the picks, know the tendencies. Like linebackers with special teams ability, the Cowboys love players who hail from the Smurf Turf of Boise State.

Dallas also might find themselves with a sudden need at safety.

Sure they have Jayvon Kerase, Malik Hooker, and Israel Mukuamu all under contract, but the first two are free agents in 2024 and Izzy may be better classified as a slot CB at this point, given his college experience and most recent usage in Dallas.

Suddenly, the Dallas Cowboys aren’t quite so deep and could use a developmental guy to groom for 2024.

Tyreque Jones is a box safety who could be developed into a subpackage role and special teams quite easily. At 6-foot-2, 205lbs, Jones is a Kearse starter kit. He fits the role Izzy was expected to fit but appeared to outgrow, in a way, when he showed nickel CB prowess.

With their three top-100 picks, the Dallas Cowboys addressed starting WR, starting CB, and offensive line. They then picked up a future starting RB (future, assuming Tony Pollard is back on the tag in 2023) and they added a well-rounded TE to round out the tight end rotation.

They drafted a big WR and a long CB, to offer depth and serve unique roles. And they brought in a new young DT to play 2-gap and NT. Finally, LB and SAF were added as special teams weapons who have the potential to take on a subpackage role down the road.

Most notably, the Cowboys added playmakers at cornerback, receiver, and running back who make the team more formidable when teams reach the postseason and playmakers are leaned on most.
