WITH THE 176TH PICK OF THE 2023 NFL DRAFT THE DALLAS COWBOYS SELECT:

DeMarcco Hellams. 176. player. 123. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. SAFETY. Alabama

The Dallas Cowboys enjoyed the best safety play the franchise has seen since should-be Hall of Famer Darren Woodson and Roy Williams were a tandem. Just as fast as their great safety play finally arrives in big D, so it can be gone just as quickly.

Donovan Wilson had a career year and is set to hit the Free Agent market. The Dallas Cowboys will also have to decide if they want to keep Malik Hooker or save over $4 million against the cap by cutting him. The Cowboys certainly do not want to lose an enforcer type safety and their center fielder in the same off season. If the team gets priced out on Wilson a player like DeMarcco Hellams could be of assistance.

Hellams comes in with an NFL ready made body at 6’1″ 213lbs and his strengths and weaknesses closely resemble the early play of the potentially departing Donovan Wilson.

Both play best downhill. Hard thumpers who play strong in the box. Both decent in coverage as long as they aren’t asked to turn and run deep and can keep everything in front of them. This is an area Wilson greatly improved, but it’ll be an early issue if teams get favorable matchups on Hellams. Helping in the run game will be Hellams early calling.
