One of the biggest needs many feel the Dallas Cowboys have is that of a wide receiver. While there is some discussion between slot or outside, there is a general consensus that speed and route running are two things they need to look at.

While Quentin won’t line up much in the slot, he does offer size and speed on the outside which the Cowboys currently lack. This would allow both CeeDee Lamb and Michael Gallup to move around a little more to create favorable matchups.

Johnston is fast, like 4.3 40 fast, fast. This speed allowed him to beat zone coverages in college and will help an NFL team do the same. If Johnston gets a free release he is dangerous to set up a defender and blow past him for large plays.

While there will be more technical route runners, Johnston is good when he gets the release and can work into his route, where he is good at sinking the hips and creating space. His height and size help him with contested passes and breaking arm tackles.

Where some teams may have some concerns with Johnston isn’t so much as physical as it will be how he will face more man coverage. When pressed, Johnston doesn’t utilize his size to power through the press which takes him off his route.

When he is off his route, corners seem to stay with him better, especially across the middle. While his height gives him an advantage in contested passes, there was a little inconsistency in college, but there is enough where it appears he should be fine. He might just need to learn how to use his size a little more than he was asked at TCU.
