Dallas Cowboys still could use another veteran receiver (who and why)
By Dink Kearney
The impact on the Dallas Cowboys
This offense has a quartet of tight ends as pass catchers that will be difficult to defend, but this offense needs game-changing receivers, too, that can make it multi-facet with its skillset players.
Simply put, the more offensive weapons a team has the harder it is for defenses to defend and prepare for. A player like Landry will excel in the 11 personnel (1 RB +1 TE+3 WR’s) and open up the flood gates for Lamb and Cooks to literally “fry” defenses. With Dallas’ offense expected to use more 12 and 13 personnel ( 2/3 tight ends), Landry becomes more of a luxury for the offense.
Further, Landry will become the linchpin for Dak because he is a fantastic route runner with great hands. This translation means Dak does not have to worry about his passes being tipped or being intercepted because the receiver lacks separation and butter fingers.
In conclusion
Besides being a reliable underneath slot receiver, Landry is the safety valve Dak needs on those crucial third downs that breaks defenses back in the waning minutes of a must win divisional game. What the Dallas Cowboys get in Landry is a player from 2015-2020 that has recorded 1,166 yards after contact, 1,748 yards after a catch, and 91 receptions of 15 plus yards that ranked first among slot receivers during that time frame.
Despite the ankle injury with the New Orleans Saints, Landry caught passes from a declining/aging Andy Dalton, an inconsistent Jameis Winston, and from a running back pretending to play quarterback, Taysom Hill. A healthy Landry can expect a bounce back season that at least make the Dallas Cowboys true contenders in a wide open NFC.
Dak is way better than that trio combined. And since Stephen loves to sign really good players for cheap prices, he should jump on signing Landry in the same manner that frugal man finds an expensive suit at the Goodwill store.
