Mavericks pairing Luka Doncic and Draymond Green a technical (foul) disaster
By Reid Hanson
The Dallas Mavericks are facing a pivotal offseason in which the decisions made today promise to have lasting effects far into their future. Coming off a season in which they failed to even qualify for the postseason, they risk upsetting and pushing their lone super star out of town.
This summer they are set on undoing mistakes (bad contracts) as much as they are set on upgrading. It’s going to take assets to accomplish both since they’ll need to package something (like a draft pick) just to move contracts like Davis Bertans, JaVale McGee and/or Tim Hardaway.
They can’t afford anymore mistakes.
Golden State enforcer, Draymond Green, is opting out of his contract, so the Mavericks need to decide if Green fits into their long-term vision.
As working peices of a machine, Green and the Mavericks sound like a good fit. The Mavs love players who can play multiple roles and Green has one of the most versatile players over the years, providing strong defense playing anything from the 3, 4 or 5.
Green’s toughness makes him a physical enforcer and bully. He’s the perfect protector for Doncic who is limited on defense and can be a target of hard fouls. Green’s age is obviously a concern. He’s 33 which means his best ball is behind him. His performance in 2022-23 seem to support that decline as well.
There’s also the fact Green seems to be a magnet for technical fouls. Much like Doncic, Green is a league-leader in this somewhat shameful category making the pairing a very unstable force on the basketball court.
He’s not going to be cheap either. Green opted out of $27.6 million meaning he intends to make well over that figure on his next deal. It’s likely the back half of his next deal will be seen as a overpayment for what he’s offering (depends on the length, or course).
There’s also the fact the Warriors and Green are still trying to work out a deal between them. No one can use him as well as Golden State and they see their window closing and are more inclined to overspend to get a coupe more years of contention from their squad.

It’s not a great match and a technical (foul) disaster that the Mavericks would likely regret in a year or two.
