2. Mazi Smith, DL
This one is undoubtedly going to be controversial because Mazi Smith still has a very long way to go in his NFL career. I can't help but wonder if some team like the Los Angeles Chargers won't come calling to "rescue" Smith, getting him back under Jim Harbaugh and Jesse Minter before the Cowboys can permanently ruin him.
And to be fair, it's not all the Cowboys' fault that Smith hasn't lived up to his first-round billing yet, but kind of.
For the second straight offseason, Cowboys fans are wondering if a new defensive coordinator can fix what's been done to damage the first couple of years of Smith's career. Instead of letting him play his true position as a rookie, Dan Quinn was having Smith play more of a 3-technique role and trying to get the most out of his athletic traits as an interior pass rusher. Shifting him away from his true 1T/0T position was a mistake.
Mike Zimmer tried to make corrections, and Smith was better in his second NFL season, but there's still just something missing.
Now, it's up to Matt Eberflus to "fix" Smith and get him put in positions where he can actually have success. Eberflus says that he liked Smith when he was coming out of Michigan a couple of years ago and the traits are certainly there in spades to work with. But are the traits going to translate at this level? Will he be able to earn the trust of Cowboys fans? Are the minimal improvements enough to quell the frustration of him not looking like a 1st-round player?
