3 Mavericks Leaving Dallas in the New Year (2025 Edition)
By Jack Gurley
With 2024 quickly coming to an end, it is time to reflect on what the Mavericks have accomplished over these past 12 months.
This was a historic year for the Mavericks, as they were able to return to the Finals for the first time since 2011. Following their Finals run, the Mavericks have remained one of the most dominant teams in the league and currently sit fourth in the Western Conference with a solid 20-12 record.
While 2024 has been a remarkably successful year for the Mavericks organization, the roster will continue to transform as they continue to look for ways to remain competitive going forward.
With a new year approaching there will be several Mavs who will be entering their final few months with the organization before their time in Dallas comes to an end. We will look at the three most likely Mavericks roster players who won't return once this season concludes.
3. Spencer Dinwiddie
While it has been nice having Spencer Dinwiddie back in a Mavs uniform this season, he will likely not remain in Dallas for the foreseeable future. Yes, Dinwiddie is a solid contributor to the Mavericks, but his time will likely come to an end sooner rather than later.
Due to several emerging stars on the roster looking for more playing time, it appears that Dinwiddie is currently holding a spot in the Mavs rotation that could be given to a young, talented player like Jaden Hardy. Hardy has solidified himself as a solid role player for the Mavericks but has dealt with limited playing time due to the heavy veteran presence on the roster.
It's been a joy to witness Dinwiddie’s resurgence since arriving in Dallas, but moving on from him will benefit the Mavs overall as they continue to develop more young talent and prepare for their future.
2. Dante Exum
Last season, Exum arrived on the scene seemingly out of nowhere and became one of the most versatile role players on the team. He played 55 games for the Mavericks and quickly established himself as one of the most consistent members of the bench, averaging nearly eight points a game through the regular season.
Although Exum was a reliable contributor to the Mavs' success last season, he has been forced to miss the entirety of this season so far due to wrist surgery he underwent this past October.
With Exum out of the rotation it seems that the team has moved on without him. The front office added several young additions to team this past offseason, including Naji Marshall and Quentin Grimes, so it seems that Exum’s role in rotation has been diminished.
While Exum is expected to return to the Mavericks in less than a month, it will be interesting to see how or if Jason Kidd utilizes him once he returns. Even if Exum does get a adequate amount of playing time once he returns, it will still remain unlikely that he will remain with the Mavs once this season comes to an end.
While it is disappointing to see Exum likely leave the Mavericks in a few months, his departure could open up more opportunities for younger players looking to establish a role with Dallas.
