4 Cowboys Whose Exits Would Be Addition by Subtraction This Offseason
Dallas Cowboys fans are hoping to see some serious changes this offseason.
America's Team failed to live up to its nickname this season. They finished the 2024 campaign with a 7-10 record, which caused them to miss the playoffs for the first time since 2020. Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones will have to work hard to upgrade the roster in the coming months, and one way he can do that is by getting rid of some players.
After all, addition by subtraction has helped teams — including the Cowboys — in the past. If a player does more harm than good on the roster, it makes a ton of sense to part ways for the betterment of the franchise.
With that in mind, here are four Cowboys whose offseason exits will benefit the team.
1-2. Cooper Rush/Trey Lance, QB
The Cowboys made waves before the 2024 season began, signing franchise quarterback Dak Prescott to a four-year, $240 million extension.
Unfortunately, Prescott's early-season performance didn't match his price tag. He didn't have much of an opportunity to turn things around as his year prematurely ended when he underwent surgery to repair his hamstring in November. With no one knowing how he'll perform when he returns to the gridiron, Cowboys fans are starting to wonder if it's time for the team to draft another QB.
Having said that, Cooper Rush and Trey Lance's potential offseason exits could open the door for Dallas to add a QB prospect in April.
Rush, 31, has been in and out of the organization for nearly a decade, however, he's at the stage of his career where he won't get any better. Meanwhile, Lance — who was acquired from the San Francisco 49ers in August 2023 — failed to impress when he made his first start as a Cowboy against the Washington Commanders in Week 18.
Now that Rush and Lance are set to hit free agency, the Cowboys are free to draft another gunslinger to learn behind Prescott. The 31-year-old veteran's latest contract could be his last and it'd be in Jones & Co.'s best interest to find his successor before it's too late.
