5 Rangers on Thin Ice This Offseason
2. Jon Gray, RHP
Jon Gray was another Rangers pitcher who left much to be desired on the mound in 2024.
In his second campaign with the franchise, Gray went 5-6 with a 4.47 ERA in 23 games with 19 starts. Although his performance was far from putrid, the fact that he surrendered 11 earned runs on 10 hits across 6 2/3 innings in his final two starts left Rangers fans wondering if he still deserved a spot in the rotation.
Gray, 32, is signed at $13 million for the 2024 season, which might be too expensive for Texas based on this season's performance. Dallas Morning News' Evan Grant reported on Oct. 23 that Rangers owner Ray Davis is making it a goal to get under the $241 million luxury tax threshold this winter. One way to help with that is by moving on from the underperforming veteran righty.
Could Gray bounce back? Sure, but the Rangers can also likely replicate his production (or even improve upon it) with a cheaper arm. If someone is willing to take on Gray's contract, it's a no-brainer — president of baseball operations Chris Young must pounce on that deal.
