5 Rangers on Thin Ice This Offseason
5. Tyler Mahle, RHP
The 2024 season was quite the rollercoaster ride for Tyler Mahle.
After signing a two-year contract with the Rangers in December, Mahle started the year on the injured list as he continued to recover from Tommy John surgery. He was eventually cleared to return in August, however, his season only lasted three appearances before he ended up back on the IL with a shoulder injury.
Mahle failed to impress in his limited appearances, registering a 4.97 ERA with 10 strikeouts across 12 2/3 innings. Even though he's still young enough (30) to, theoretically, turn his career around, the fact that he's only made eight starts across the last two seasons is concerning for his outlook.
Mahle's salary rises to $16.5 million in 2025, which is a significant figure for someone who's only averaged 10 starts in the last three seasons. While he could go on to be healthy and prove to be worth that amount, there's also a chance that he could wind up missing a chunk of the year with another lengthy injury.
If the Rangers want to avoid any further headaches, moving on from Mahle this offseason should be considered by management.
