Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer made it pretty clear that he loves his new defensive coordinator, Christian Parker. They teamed up to purposely throw off the defense, but the play worked out just as both coaches hoped.
Christian Parker pretended that his headset was out, and DeMarvion Overshown "immediately made the right play call," according to Schottenheimer. The conversation about the green dot has been on for over a month, and it looks like Overshown passed his test.
Others are calling the defense, but Overshown seems like the favorite, solely because he has the best ceiling this season. Overshown believes he can be the best at his position in the NFL one day, and while he still needs to show that, he has the best chance based on what he showed Schotty and Parker.

Overshown added in an interview after Thursday's practice that he may average 10 tackles playing middle linebacker this season. It's high expectations, but not impossible in any way. In 2024, he racked up 90 total tackles. He averaged 6.92 combined tackles per game.
A lot is riding on Overshown because there are so many expectations for him, but he hasn't gotten a fair chance. He tore his ACL in the 2023 preseason. In 2024, he had that productive season before tearing his ACL, MCL and PCL. He missed 10 games in 2025 recovering from that, and now, he's finally got a clean bill of health.
With all that said, those injuries can be long-term issues, but early signs show Overshown responding well, and there shouldn't be much concern, at least for now.
Per Clarence Hill Jr. of All-City DLLS, Caleb Downs, Shemar James and Curtis Robinson are also wearing the dot. That says a lot about the rookie to have some responsibility as the green dot. Downs was one of the candidates in the running to run the defense, but it wouldn't hurt if the Cowboys give it two seasons before they give him that responsibility.
It may not sound important, but whoever communicates with the defense is basically a de facto leader, even if they aren't wearing the "C" on their uniform.
Even Dee Winters would be an excellent choice, but Overshown has been there with Schottenheimer a lot longer. He already passed Schottenheimer's "accidental" test when he thought the signals went down, and the former Longhorn LB is as confident as ever.
