It wasn't a surprise that the Dallas Cowboys' primary focus entering the draft was wholesale changes to a defensive roster that proved to be a consistent liability in the 2025 season. However, even the most optimistic Dallas fan couldn't have seen Ohio State defensive back Caleb Downs falling all the way to No. 11, where the Cowboys would trade up and land one of the most dynamic defenders in this year's draft. All of a sudden, a defensive rebuild that felt as if it was already losing momentum is once again on track.
What makes Downs so impactful is his nose for the football, along with his ability to line up in a myriad of positions. Defensive coordinator Christian Parker now has a weapon he can deploy in a variety of ways, which can help put the pieces already added in the 2026 offseason together.
Dallas already brought in corner Cobie Durant and safety Jalen Thompson, with Downs serving as the final piece of a secondary that now gives Cowboy fans reason for excitement. Thompson and Durant are both solid additions, but the franchise still needed to address question marks by finding a true defensive playmaker as the obvious missing piece.
Downs fills this role and gives the Cowboys the most exciting secondary core the franchise has put together over the last three seasons. Add in the fact that pass rusher Rashan Gary and defensive lineman Otito Ogbonnia were brought in to beef up the defensive line, and it is easy to see Dallas's vision.
Cowboys Defensive Rebuild Far Closer After Surprise Selection of Caleb Downs
Downs serves as a defining piece of a defense built to be aggressive and better create plays to support an explosive offense. This isn't to suggest that the Cowboys will be one of the league's best defensive units overnight, but rather pointing out the potential impact of the rookie and how well Downs will fit into the existing pieces.
The Cowboys understood that there are still question marks in the secondary and brought in a player who can wear several hats. The Ohio State product can start the season in one role and be moved based on any potential shortcomings of the secondary. It is an incredible asset and speaks to why it is such a huge part of completing the defensive reset.
It is impossible to believe the Cowboys won't be a far more capable defensive unit built around an offseason of quiet additions and the surprising selection of Downs. No question, the Cowboys are clear winners of Day 1 of the draft with the defensive back falling their way, giving the franchise a key resource to complete a defensive rebuild that now looks far more impressive.
