The Dallas Cowboys saw their season end last week with a Week 18 loss to the Washington Commanders. The Cowboys finished the 2024 campaign with a 7-10 record, giving them the 12th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Dallas can go in many different directions with the 12th pick in the draft. They could address their defensive line, get another wide receiver to pair with star CeeDee Lamb, or take a running back in the first round.

Many Dallas fans thought the team would take a running back in the 2024 draft, but they went with Ezekiel Elliott and Rico Dowdle. The last time the Cowboys took an RB in the first round was Elliott in 2016 (fourth overall pick).

If the Cowboys take that route, Boise State star and Heisman Trophy runner-up Ashton Jeanty would be the top option. Jeanty, who went to Lone Star High School in Frisco, TX, was one of the best players in college football this season.

The 5-foot-9 running back led the Broncos to a 12-2 record, a Mountain West Conference title, and a College Football Playoff berth. Jeanty produced a career-high 2,601 rushing yards and 29 touchdowns on 374 carries.

The former Boise State star would be a perfect addition to the Cowboys’ offense and has let it be known that he wants to play for the organization.

“I would love to play for the Cowboys. It’d be like a dream come true,” Jeanty said to Pat Doney of NBC 5.

"Obviously, I used to play in their practice stadium and all our home games in high school. Even when my freshman year when we came down here for the Frisco Bowl we practiced in there again so it would just feel like I’m at home, Jeanty continued. I ain’t going to say too much but you know Dallas, they’ve always had a good running back. And when they got a good running back they play a lot better."

If you are a Dallas fan, Jeanty would be a major upgrade over Elliott and Dowdle, even though the latter had his first 1,000-yard rushing season in his career (1,079). A running back room with Jeanty and Dowdle is much better than the duo of Elliott and Dowdle.

However, when it comes to Dallas, you should expect the unexpected because they sometimes go against the grain and outsmart themselves.
