The first half of the Dallas Cowboys' 2026 season was widely discussed when the slate was set a while back. It's filled with high-level opponents and some unfavorable dates, but it will give a true test of how good the Cowboys are at the start of the year and if they are ultimately true contenders.
One of the most anticipated matchups every few seasons is when the Cowboys take on their state rival, the Houston Texans. The battle between the only two Texas teams is always exciting, and that returns in 2026.
It does feel like this matchup has been overlooked and forgotten a bit. Given the start the Cowboys have, especially with the Brazil game against the Baltimore Ravens and their usual rivalry game against the Green Bay Packers, the Texans game hasn't gotten enough attention.
However, the game against Houston could end up being the biggest early test for Dallas.
Cowboys vs Texans in 2026 is crucial to the Cowboys' season
Every time the Cowboys face the Texans, the game is savored. This 8th edition of the rivalry against the Texans has the potential to be the best one yet. The Cowboys do face an extra challenge in getting ready for this game, given the short turnaround coming back from Brazil. The return to Texas will take extra time, followed by heading to Houston.
Not to mention, the Texans will be the beginning of the Cowboys' gauntlet against Tampa Bay, Green Bay, and then Philadelphia. The Texans happen to be standing in the way of a physical team.
The Cowboys won't get their usual schedule, and it's another challenge to overcome for this game. The Texans have proven they are one of the top teams in the AFC, with what's expected to be the league's best defense. It'll be at NRG Stadium, and the road environment going up against a fierce defense like the Texans will not be easy.
But also, the Cowboys have something going for them. It's the lost hype regarding C.J. Stroud. He has not been the same since his amazing rookie season, and he's coming off a horrendous playoff performance. The Cowboys' defense could take advantage if Stroud continues to struggle into the season.
If the Cowboys can face all these challenges and come out on top in a shorter week, that would be very impressive. The Cowboys' top offense with Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens and Javonte Williams going up against the Texans' vaunted defense should be great entertainment.
Passing this test just might be the biggest one of the early year.
