The Dallas Cowboys training camp is well underway, and with it have come the expected skirmishes. A big piece of early preseason practices is setting a tone and demanding a level of expected intensity. Predictably, in the summer heat with ultra-competitive athletes, this is going to lead to fights.

As long as nothing is taken over the line, it is an accepted part of the game. However, that isn't how Dallas head coach Brian Schottenheimer sees things based on how the Cowboys have finished in recent seasons.

Schottenheimer made it clear that fighting wasn't going to be tolerated, and Ajani Cornelius found this out the hard way. The lineman was ejected after throwing a punch on Wednesday, leading to the head coach having words with his team. It wasn't just Cornelius creating the frustration with a number of Dallas players getting heated during practice. This resulted in the ejection and players being forced to run sprints. Fans now have a bit more information on the head coach and how he views the roster and why it has consistently fallen short in recent seasons.

Cowboys Head Coach Brian Schottenheimer Calls Out Roster After Camp Skirmishes

When players were asked about what the head coach's messaging was, it was a simple one. Schottenheimer made it clear that Dallas has long had the talent to get the job done, but not the focus and discipline. This is a fair critique when you look back at the Cowboys teams that have fallen short in the playoffs. Dating all the way back to Tony Romo and Dez Bryant, talent was never the issue for Dallas, but execution in the biggest moments.

Unlike many coaches, the former OC doesn't view fights as a positive sign, but one that displays a lack of focus and discipline. Schottenheimer's view is one that is easy to understand as Dallas searches for answers after years of fumbled opportunities. What is a prestige franchise has been consistently irrelevant after the Wildcard Round of the playoffs. One could point fingers at ownership as a huge reason for this failure.

However, all the head coach can control is his staff and the standards to which it holds his players. With this in mind, perhaps it will prove to be the right approach for a team desperate to return to contention. It is far different than either of the previous two head coaches, who appeared to prefer a far more relaxed approach. No question, it is a tone-setting decision and one that will continue to put pressure on the Cowboys roster.
