There haven't been many weaknesses for the Dallas Cowboys this preseason, and it's been time to watch some unexpected faces shine on the field, like Camden Brown, the undrafted wide receiver out of Auburn and Georgia Southern, who has been on a tear. But could he end up getting the boot anyway?
Jonathan Mingo had a recent breakout game against the Arizona Cardinals, with two catches, 62 yards and a touchdown. The Cowboys have had Mingo for longer, since they got him in a 2024 trade. Since then, Mingo hasn't been too active, and Brown has broken out this preseason.
Brown's performance against the Seattle Seahawks went viral among Cowboys fans when he had three catches for 62 yards and two touchdowns. That included a one-handed touchdown grab, and he became a star overnight. He had two catches for 77 yards and a 70-yard reception against the Cardinals. It's possible Mingo could still end up as the WR5, and that means Brown may not make the cut.
Camden Brown may not make the 53-man roster cuts over Jonathan Mingo
Mingo is the older receiver here, and while he has a case to make the 53-man cut, he hasn't done much in the regular season. Could that eventually change? Maybe, but Brown has done everything he's needed to this preseason. We've already seen how Mingo is inactive on the full-time team. What do they have to lose by giving the young Brown a shot?
Mingo is credited with six catches for 71 yards since joining the Cowboys. To be fair, he's expected to be the last WR on the depth chart (like Brown), but that doesn't mean the last WR can't make an impact.
Cowboys beat writer Calvin Watkins gave the nod to Mingo and pushed Brown to the practice squad. It's normal for a UDFA not to make it, but Brown has been nothing short of amazing so far. The Cowboys could end up keeping six WRs, but that's a lot. There's a better chance we see the Cowboys end up with five than six.
Everyone else, like Marquez Valdez-Scantling and Anthony Smith, is probably out of the picture at this point, and the battle for the fifth spot is clear.
There's still one game for each WR to prove themselves, but even if Brown doesn't make the final cuts, the Cowboys can bring him back to the practice squad. It's still a win for the rookie, but it'd be cool to see him make the final cuts, as he's become an easy fan favorite.
