The Dallas Cowboys know they must find improvements to this team after a lackluster 2024 campaign. This team will look different with new coaches on the sidelines and some key players no longer around.

Guard Zack Martin informed the Cowboys that he will retire after a stellar career. Dallas must find a replacement for the All-Pro guard and there is speculation that another player could follow Martin out the door.

In an article written by David Moore of the Dallas Morning News, he highlighted that DeMarcus Lawrence, 33, could follow in Martin's footsteps, although nothing like that has been confirmed.

Moore wrote, "Zack Martin informed the Cowboys earlier this month that he would retire. Lawrence is at a comparable stage in his career, although he hasn’t told the club he intends to follow Martin’s path."

DeMarcus Lawrence is a Name to Watch Going Forward

Lawrence has been a member of the Cowboys for the past 11 seasons after being a first-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. He has been an effective player for them but last year, he was limited to four games.

He suffered a Lisfranc injury in Week 4, ending his campaign. This was Lawrence's third lower leg injury. He broke his foot in 2021 during practice, which caused him to miss 10 games that season. The Boise State product also fractured his foot during training camp of the 2014 season.

While he's been a stout player when healthy, he will be 33 years old when the 2025 season kicks off. Although he hasn't talked about retirement, the Cowboys haven't heard from him about that.

Jerry Jones said, "We don’t know that one yet. We’re going to meet with his agent here."

Lawrence has played in 141 games (123 starts) with the Cowboys. In those outings, he's racked up 450 total tackles, 97 TFLs, 126 QB hits, and 61.5 sacks.

The Cowboys are a better defensive line with him on the field but some conversations need to be had ahead of the 2025 campaign. And those will determine if he is on board or he'll step away. In addition, Lawrence is slated to be a free agent this offseason.
