Cowboys Cut Recent Trade Acquisition to Make Room for Newcomer
By Jovan Alford
Earlier in the preseason, the Dallas Cowboys made a trade to bolster their secondary, acquiring former second-round pick Andrew Booth in exchange for Nahshon Wright.
Cowboys fans thought they were getting a steal in Booth, who played 11 percent of defensive snaps over the last two seasons. It was a perfect low-risk, high-reward move by Dallas to see if they could get Booth back on track.
To no one’s surprise, Booth struggled to get on the field this season and became the odd man out on the 53-man roster.
According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Cowboys released Booth on Tuesday to make room for second-year wide receiver Jonathan Mingo.
Mingo was acquired from the Carolina Panthers in exchange for a 2025 fourth-round pick. The Cowboys also received a 2025 seventh-round pick.
As for Booth, he had six combined tackles in three games with the Cowboys. The 24-year-old cornerback played 20 percent of defensive and 33 percent of special teams.
Dallas hopes the Mingo trade will pan out better than the Booth trade, especially since they gave up a fourth-round pick. To make matters worse for the Cowboys, Wright is still with the Vikings as he was signed to their practice squad at the end of the preseason.
In hindsight, the Cowboys were better off keeping Wright, who played in 32 games across three seasons. Last season with Dallas, the 6-foot-4 defensive back spent most of his on special teams, playing 75% of snaps and appearing in 12 games.
