The Dallas Cowboys made a major financial investment in Dak Prescott prior to the 2024 season when the team agreed to terms with the quarterback on a four-year, $240 million extension that will keep the veteran in the Lone Star State through 2028.
Unfortunately for the Cowboys, things went south sooner than anyone associated with the organization would have hoped this past season as Prescott suffered a season-ending hamstring injury during the team's 27-21 loss to the Atlanta Falcons in Week 9. As we all know, Dallas owned a 4-4 record heading into that game and the loss was just the start of what turned out to be a disappointing finish to the 2024 campaign for the Cowboys as they lost six of their final nine games to finish the season with the third best record in the NFC East at 7-10.
However, fast forward to April and Prescott has rehabbed to the point where he is confident that he could take the field right now if Dallas had a regular season game to play. During an appearance at the 35th annual Children's Cancer Fund gala, Prescott was asked where things stood with regard to his health and provided as positive of an update as any Cowboys fan could have asked to hear.
"If I had to play a game today, I definitely could do that," said Prescott, via the team's website. "It's about moving forward healthy to make sure I can play 17 times, 20 [games] -- whatever we get to when the time's right."
This is the exact approach that Prescott should be taking when it comes to his health and his ultimate return to the field for Dallas as he is one of the key components of the Cowboys' offensive attack. When you take into consideration the fact that Prescott's backup is no longer Cooper Rush and will be the talented, yet very inexperienced, Joe Milton III, Dallas simply cannot afford for this hamstring injury to be anything that lingers into the 2025 campaign for the former Mississippi State Bulldogs standout.
Prior to his season-ending injury against the Falcons, Prescott completed 64.7% of his attempts for 1,978 yards to go along with 11 touchdown passes, and eight interceptions. Over the course of his career, Prescott has thrown for 31,437 yards, 213 touchdowns, and 82 interceptions to own a career QB rating of 98.1.
We will likely get our first real look at Prescott once the Cowboys open training camp later this summer but, until then, updates like these will bring a smile to the face of Dallas fans.
