The Dallas Cowboys have had their share of storylines this training camp. That's to be expected with new head coach Brian Schottenheimer and several new players in the fold.
But multiple players are looking to stand out and carve out roles for themselves going into 2025. George Pickens wasted no time shading the Pittsburgh Steelers this week. At the same time, cornerback Kaiir Elam has been making plays and could be a breakout player in training camp.
Cowboys CB Kaiir Elam Could Play Bigger Role for Dallas Than Expected
This past March, Dallas acquired Elam from the Buffalo Bills after three underwhelming seasons. In 29 games, he posted 81 total tackles, six pass deflections, and two interceptions.
While he wasn't able to put things together with the Bills, Dallas knows that Elam was a first-round pick in 2022, so he has the traits that make him an intriguing defender, and he's put some of it on display the first week of camp.
Elam picked off Dak Prescott when he was targeting Jalen Tolbert on a crossing route during Wednesday's practice. After the interception, the two players were seen talking about the play on the sideline. Cowboys writer Clarence Hill Jr. pointed out Prescott asked Elam what he saw on that play, so he could learn from his mistake.
Elam appreciated Prescott coming over to ask him about the play and just said he trusted his instincts.
Nonetheless, the Florida product has been impressing thus far and is making plays on the ball. This is just a continuation of what he was doing during spring workouts. Cowboys writer Nick Harris of the Star-Telegram believes that Elam has a chance to be a starter in Week 1.
There's no guarantee that Trevon Diggs will be on the field to start the season since he's on the PUP list. If he does need more time to rehab, Elam would love to be the guy they lean on.
Considering the Cowboys didn't pick up his fifth-year option and he's slated to hit free agency at the end of the year, Elam is motivated.
When pads come on next week, that'll be the next test for players on the team, and if Elam keeps up this solid display, it'll be hard to keep him off the field.
