Cowboys Dream Draft Target Plotting to Join Super Bowl Contender
Barring an unlikely turnaround, the Dallas Cowboys likely won't be participating in the upcoming NFL postseason. America's Team headed into Thanksgiving Day with an uninspiring 4-7 record, leaving Cowboys fans more interested in the 2025 NFL draft rather than any of the remaining games on the schedule.
While April's draft will help the Cowboys address several needs, one of the biggest is the running back room. Dallas' backfield has been among the worst in the NFL this season and with a potentially high draft pick on the horizon, a chunk of the fanbase would love to see owner/general manager Jerry Jones select Boise State RB Ashton Jeanty.
Jeanty — who played high school football in Frisco, TX — has been open to the idea of playing for the Cowboys in the past. However, it looks like something may have changed as the promising phenom now appears to have his sights set on joining another franchise.
Cowboys News: Ashton Jeanty Open to Joining Chiefs
On a recent stream, Jeanty revealed that he would love to play for Andy Reid's Kansas City Chiefs — mainly because of the franchise's superstar quarterback, Patrick Mahomes.
"Hey, If I go to the Chiefs, me and (Mahomes) would get hell Super Bowls, I can't lie," Jeanty told viewers about the possibility of going to Kansas City.
While Cowboys fans are likely disappointed by Jeanty's remarks, his fantasy scenario isn't that surprising. The Chiefs have been the NFL's most successful franchise since Mahomes took over center, winning three Super Bowls while amassing an 85-25 record across 100 regular-season games during that stretch.
Any prospect whose goal is to eventually hoist the Lombardi Trophy would want to be a part of that success, especially since the Chiefs' championship window will likely remain open as long as Mahomes is on the roster.
At the same time, Jeanty shouldn't fool himself into believing that Kansas City is a realistic destination come April.
After all, the Boise State RB is one of the top prospects in next year's class, regardless of position. Pro Football Focus currently has Jeanty rated at No. 4 in its latest update while most mock drafts have him selected in the 10-15 range. The Cowboys, at their current pace, will have a shot at drafting him whereas the Chiefs — who'll all but certainly be picking at the end of Round 1 — probably won't have a chance barring an injury.
The BSU runner is in the middle of a record-breaking campaign that is seeing him lead all of college football in carries (275), rushing yards (2,062), and total scrimmage touchdowns (28). He's yet to rush for fewer than 127 yards in a game and has hit the 200-yard mark four times.
That's the type of presence the Cowboys could use after this season's ground-related struggles. Heading into Week 13, Dallas ranked second-worst in the NFL when it came to both rushing yards per game and yards per carry.
At the end of the day, any franchise that lands Jeanty will become better for it. Let's just hope that ends up being the Cowboys once the dust settles.
The 2025 NFL Draft goes down at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, WI, beginning on Thursday, April 24.
