Cowboys fans should be doing backflips over Giants' latest contract extension

Jerry Jones should love every bit of this.

The Dallas Cowboys haven't had the best of luck in the draft in recent years, but in that same timeframe, they've had plenty more to celebrate than the New York Giants. That's why Cowboys fans should love the news that came out of their NFC East rival on Thursday evening.

Per Ian Rapaport and Mike Garafolo, the Giants have signed general manager Joe Schoen to a multi-year contract extension, and he will be in-house making decisions with new head coach John Harbaugh for years to come.

Cowboys fans may ask, "Why should we be jumping up and down about this news?" First of all, most Giants fans are reacting the opposite. Second, the Giants have gone 22-45-1 since Schoen took the job. Not optimistic at all if you're a Giants fan, but it's a great way to end the week if you're a Cowboys fan.

Cowboys fans should love Giants GM Joe Schoen getting signed to a multi-year extension

Why else should Cowboys fans love this? Schoen hasn't shown that he can rebuild a team the right way or even win in the regular season. His record is one thing, but he's made tons of poor decisions over his four-year tenure.

Schoen allowed Saquon Barkley to walk in free agency, who then won a Super Bowl in his first year with Philadelphia. Thanks for that, Joe. He also orchestrated the Daniel Jones contract, a four-year, $160 million deal. Just a year later, Jones would be released by the Giants.

The draft hasn't been too nice to Schoen either. In particular, fans are still scratching their heads at the 2022 NFL Draft, when the Giants picked offensive guard Evan Neal. Neal didn't play in a game in 2025 (subscription required) and was a healthy scratch for the first 10 games before landing on injured reserve in Week 11.

Surprisingly, the Giants re-signed Neal this offseason, another questionable move by Schoen. Unless he comes in this season and massively improves, we can call it a steal, but nothing from Neal's first four seasons suggests that will happen.

In this year's draft, the Giants passed up on Caleb Downs twice, a guy who may win Defensive Rookie of the Year. But it's not like they had a bad first round either. Ohio State edge rusher Arvell Reese got picked at No. 5, and Miami OL Francis Mauigoa was picked at No. 10.

We have to tip our hat off when we have the opportunity. Reese was one of the best players in the draft with elite speed and versatility, who's still getting better. Mauigoa may be the best offensive lineman the Giants may get while Jaxson Dart is young and healthy.

For the most part, this should be something the rest of the NFC East should celebrate. Jerry Jones may have some skeletons in the closet, but he has plenty of wins in his 35+ year tenure as a GM. Schoen has had a much shorter tenure and hasn't proved much.
