Cowboys fans will laugh at ESPN’s prediction for Trevon Diggs’ new home

Good luck with that.

Years ago, Trevon Diggs looked like a future Hall of Famer. He led the league with 11 interceptions and 2 pick-sixes in 2021, and his ability to flip the field came in huge for the Dallas Cowboys multiple times that season.

A lot has transpired since. Diggs hasn't had more than 3 interceptions in a season in the past four years, and his abilities in man coverage have always left plenty to be desired. Add his hot temper and injury issues to the mix, and that's a recipe for disaster.

That's why it's not much of a surprise to see that he's still a free agent this deep into the offseason. Nevertheless, ESPN's Matt Bowen believes his fortune might change soon, as he predicted he would join the Washington Commanders.

The Washington Commanders deserve Trevon Diggs and vice versa

"Washington could view Diggs as a reclamation project, helping him get back to being a true playmaker in the secondary. He has had 20 interceptions in six NFL seasons, including a league high of 11 in 2021," Bowen wrote. "Under new coordinator Daronte Jones, Diggs can use his man coverage traits and backfield vision to get a jump on the ball in the Commanders' pressure-heavy scheme."

Watching Diggs back in the NFC East would actually be great for the Cowboys. He's coming off allowing a passer rating of 154.2, a 75.0 percent successful catch rate, and 16.0 yards per completion last season. Despite playing in just eight games for the Cowboys, he allowed 4 touchdown receptions.

The Commanders have been desperate for help in the secondary for years now. Trey Amos was up and down as a rookie, and Mike Sainristil is better suited to play in the slot. Adding Diggs would technically allow them to move him to his natural position.

Also, Diggs is a Maryland native, and with his brother Stefon recently addressing the possibility of playing for his hometown team, perhaps it would make sense for Washington to kill two birds with one stone in this scenario.

That said, it's hard to believe that's going to end well. Diggs loves to run his mouth, and while he's already familiar with head coach Dan Quinn from their days in Dallas, he's no longer in a position to carry himself as if he were a star. In fact, he's more of a one-year wonder.

Diggs outstayed his welcome in Dallas for his attitude more than for his mediocre play. And with the Commanders looking to bounce back after a disappointing campaign, that would certainly be a match made in heaven for the Cowboys. They might even drive him to the Commanders' facility just to make sure they sign him. Dak Prescott must be licking his chops.
