Cowboys' Front Office Makes Matt Eberflus Stance Clear After Week 6 Disaster

The Cowboys have no one to blame for their issues but Jerry and Stephen Jones.

One would think that Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus has displayed more than enough inability on the job for the franchise to make a change. Unfortunately for a large segment of Cowboys fans, that doesn't appear to be on the mind of the front office.

According to Jon Machota of The Athletic, Stephen Jones offered the following sentiment on the coach: "(Eberrflus) has been an established coach in this league and has a lot of confidence that he’ll get the job done.”

It is hard to comprehend such an odd defense of a coordinator when the last time we saw Eberflus in a coaching role was in Chicago, where he was a complete and utter failure with the Bears.

All the Bears have done since parting ways with Eberflus is back up how badly the change was needed. To go back to a time where Eberflus can realistically be considered a capable leader, you have to turn the clock all the way back to the 2021 season when he was with the Indianapolis Colts. Even at the time, it was a questionable hire as Eberflus had put together a solid resume, but not one that screamed he should be a top head coaching option. All this does is reinforce the point that the Cowboys simply refuse to see, for one reason or another.

Cowboys Front Office Continues Frustrating Defense of Failing Coordinator Matt Eberflus

Taking this a step further, Stephen Jones quickly put to rest any thought that the Cowboys might entertain making what should be seen as an obviously needed change. It is hard to fathom the outlook of this front office as they sit back content to watch the group fail. Even average quarterbacks are lighting up this defense, and players are starting to grow obviously frustrated. Despite this, Jones offered the following sentiment:

""Guys, we’re worried about going to work this week and getting better each week. … I think we’re going to evolve into a good defense. We just have to continue to go to work.""
Stephen Jones

One could argue that being "worried about work" would include parting ways with a failing employee. It is hard to envision any other profession where Eberflus could display such a continued level of unsatisfactory results yet still hold his role. This isn't anything personal against the coordinator or a dislike for the coaching style. It is a complete lack of acceptance of awful results. There is a sense of belief among the fan base that the standard must be far higher than what Eberflus is capable of giving.

This all leads back to the mounting concerns that both Joneses don't care about winning as much as they do playing games with the media to keep the franchise relevant. This attitude on Eberflus unquestionably lines up with this take.

Eberflus has allowed the team to be lit up by Bryce Young, Jordan Love, and Russell Wilson this season. That is as damaging a sentiment as you can offer when you look at what the respective offenses of each quarterback have done in the time since facing Dallas. Still, the Cowboys remain content defending a coach who is consistently proving himself incapable.
