In February, Cowboys' legendary offensive guard Zack Martin announced his retirement from the league. Smith played 14 years in the NFL, including 13 with the Cowboys. Last season, the veteran offensive lineman played with the New York Jets, who signed him to a one-year, $6.5 million deal.
Smith played okay in his lone season with the Jets, posting a 72.3 pass blocking grade (45th among 141 qualified tackles) and a 72.4 run blocking grade (27th). However, he only started in 10 games after suffering a neck injury in Week 10 against the Arizona Cardinals.
That said, the former first-round pick will be remembered more fondly for his time with Dallas as he established himself as one of the premier left tackles in the league and is most likely a Hall of Famer.
The Cowboys took Smith with the ninth overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft of USC, and the rest was history. Smith became a beloved member and fan-favorite and helped the Cowboys find success on the offensive side of the ball.
In his 13 years with the Cowboys, the veteran lineman was named to eight Pro Bowls and two first-team All-Pro selections. He also had three second-team All-Pro selections, including his last year in Dallas in 2023.
The 6-foot-5, 320-pound lineman dominated during the 2010s and was recognized for his efforts as he was named to the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s All-2010 team.
Smith struggled to stay healthy in his last four years with the Cowboys, playing a combined 30 games, including 13 games in 2023. However, when he was healthy, you could never question his ability, as no matter who was under center, Smith always had the QB's blindside locked down.
