The Dallas Cowboys have gone to great lengths to revamp the defensive mess they got themselves into last season. Former defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus coached one of the worst defenses in franchise history, and that cannot happen again in 2026.

General manager/owner Jerry Jones has made a point of giving new defensive coordinator Christian Parker everything he needs to elevate this ailing unit, including potential star rookie safety Caleb Downs.

Now, with the Indianapolis Colts releasing Kenny Moore II, it's time the Cowboys double down and add another proven game-changer to the middle of the defensive backfield. He's the slot corner they need to turn things around.

Kenny Moore II is a perfect fit for the Cowboys' defense

The Colts released Moore because he wasn't a great fit for Lou Anarumo's complex defensive system. More than that, the Colts would save between $7 million and $9.9 million, and he'll get the new long-term deal he's looking for.

Moore is a proven nine-year veteran who has made a living shutting things down in the slot. ESPN's depth chart lists Downs as the starting nickel in Dallas, but he's more likely to start at either safety spot, with Malik Hooker and Jalen Thompson rotating. Of course, Downs can definitely thrive in the slot as well, but adding Moore to the mix would allow him to play in his natural position.

Even though he only started seven of 14 games last season, Moore was as productive as usual for the Colts. He finished the campaign with 55 total tackles (34 solo), 3 tackles for loss, 3 QB hits, one interception (a pick-six), 2 forced fumbles, and 6 passes defensed. He gave up just two touchdowns in coverage, with opposing quarterbacks posting a passer rating of 87.8 against him.

The Cowboys hired a defensive backs coach as their new defensive coordinator. As such, revamping the secondary and adding versatile players with a nose for the ball sounds like a recipe for success in Arlington.

This team gave up the most passing yards (251.5) and points (30.1) per game last season, while also allowing the highest third-down conversion rate (47.3) and the third-most total yards per game (391.4).

They did an amazing job of adding young talent to the roster, but even though some of them might be able to make an immediate impact, they still need battle-tested guys to help hold down the fort. Moore gives them a productive, hard-hitting slot corner who can also shut down the running game, and not signing him would be a disservice.
