The Dallas Cowboys' defense has been a massive letdown this season, especially since they have one of the best offenses in the NFL.

Defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus took some accountability for some of the defensive problems, though, and positive news could be on the horizon, as the Cowboys could be getting linebacker DeMarvion Overshown back soon. ESPN Cowboys reporter Todd Archer reported on Thursday that Overshown is increasing his workload, as he was wearing a knee brace and had his helmet. Archer added that he thinks his practice window will open up next week.

With "Agent 0" close to returning, fellow linebacker Kenneth Murray Jr. should be looking over his shoulder.

Kenneth Murray Jr. Is on the Hot Seat as DeMarvion Overshown Nears Return

Murray has started in six games for the Cowboys this season, logging 42 total tackles, two tackles for loss, and one pass breakup. Despite being on the field every game this season, he hasn't been a productive player in the middle of their defense. According to Pro Football Focus, Murray has a 39.3 overall grade (134th among 140 graded LBs), 29.2 run-defense grade (136th among 140 graded LBs), and a 50.3 coverage grade (91st among 140 graded LBs).

He also has a 99.6 passer rating allowed. In addition, he has given up 23 catches (29 targets) for 229 receiving yards. Murray has surrendered 10-plus yards per reception in four straight games.

It's clear the Cowboys should get some better play from that unit, and with Overshown on the verge of returning to the practice field, he'll be suiting up on gamedays sooner rather than later. Even though he's playing in a new scheme, he's still one of their best defenders. Before going down with his serious knee injury, Overshown secured 90 total tackles, eight TFLs, five QB hits, four pass deflections, and five sacks in 2024.

Overshown was a defender who was flying around the field, making plays in the run and pass game. Of course, expectations need to be tempered as he tore his ACL, MCL, and PCL. He will need to knock off some rust to get back in the swing of things, but he'll do so on the field.

His usage will eat into Murray's reps. Thus far into the 2025 season, the veteran defender hasn't played at a stellar level, so it wouldn't be a surprise to see his snaps decrease later on in the season when Overshown is activated.
