Cowboys' mock trade gives perfect Tyler Guyton excuse to complete defensive puzzle

The Cowboys have been linked to the Dolphins LB for a while, but now, they have a real excuse.

It's been a busy offseason for the Dallas Cowboys, as their main goal has been to correct arguably their worst defensive season in franchise history. Miami Dolphins linebacker Jordyn Brooks has been linked to the Cowboys for a while, but it looks like the Cowboys now have an excuse to go after him, and it has to do with their biggest question mark on offense.

FanSided's Wynston Wilcox wrote an article about the most surprising trades that would make sense. The Cowboys were once again linked to Brooks, but the Cowboys would have to give up Tyler Guyton and a 2027 seventh-round pick. Wilcox adds the Cowboys shouldn't be in any rush, and a move of any sort isn't likely to happen until close to the deadline.

"The Cowboys are going to see what their young players do through the preseason and evaluate if it’s worth turning to more stability. Once they’re hovering around a playoff spot, they’ll make a desperate move and that feels like this. Don’t be surprised to see Jerry Jones pull the trigger."

Cowboys could use Tyler Guyton in a trade to get Jordyn Brooks

Waiting to see which fish would survive the tank is the best idea until going for Brooks in such a blockbuster trade.

The Cowboys' offensive line was recently ranked No. 18 in the NFL, and a large part of that has to do with whether or not Guyton can be the full-time left tackle the coaching staff once dreamed of. The timeline from now until the trade deadline seems like a fair assessment, and if the Cowboys feel a change is necessary on that end, they honestly wouldn't lose much and would gain one of the trending LBs.

The Dolphins LB broke out to one of the best at his position last season. In 2025, Brooks had 183 total tackles (first in the NFL), 3.5 sacks, a forced fumble, three passes defended and 20.5 stuffs. Stuffs are when ball carriers are tackled for no gain or a loss.

The Cowboys' LBs are already looking like a decent room, especially if DeMarvion Overshown can stay on the field. He's been projected as the breakout candidate on the team, and he has all the tools to make it happen, but he's got to stay healthy. Dee Winters was a nice addition who is coming off a season of 101 total tackles.

If Jerry Jones can keep those two and get Brooks at the deadline, the Cowboys' LB room would be one of the best in the league.

If Guyton is moved, it's likely fourth-round pick Drew Shelton would take the reins. If not, we have a history of seeing Nate Thomas play on that end, as he's played 17 games and started in four. Both could also play right tackle.

Losing a seventh-round pick isn't the end of the world either, and the Dolphins' rebuilding with Jeff Hafley could use all the draft capital in the world at this point.

This may be one of the more ideal trade proposals for Brooks, but we have to wait and see how Guyton does before making any judgments.
