The Dallas Cowboys overhauled their running back room this offseason by acquiring veterans Miles Sanders and Javonte Williams to go along with rookie draft picks Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafa.

With that many new faces joining the fray, there were inevitably going to be some cuts that needed to be made. Unfortunately, one running back who has spent the last two seasons in Dallas was among the first to be placed on the chopping block.

Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston confirmed the news on Wednesday afternoon as RB Malik Davis was released. He's joined by Jack Anderson, Brock Mogensen, and Earl Bostic as players losing their jobs to free up room for incoming rookies.

After a five-year career at the University of Florida, Davis went undrafted in 2022 but was able to secure a spot on the Cowboys' practice squad. Davis made 15 appearances for Dallas during his tenure with the Cowboys and recorded 161 rushing yards on 38 carries. In addition, Davis reeled in six receptions for 63 total yards.

With Davis now out of the picture, the running back room is becoming a bit clearer as Williams and Sanders look to be the best bets to lead the charge on the ground. Blue and Mafa will battle it out with Deuce Vaughn for the third and fourth running back spots on the depth chart.

While Cowboys fans may have wanted for Dallas to prioritize the running back position in the draft earlier than they did, there is a good deal of talent with this group. Even if Jerry Jones and the rest of the Cowboys front office elects to stand pat at running back for this season, Dallas would already have a better group on paper than they did entering the 2024 campaign when Rico Dowdle and Ezekiel Elliott were tasked with leading the rushing attack.
