Cowboys Reach Out to Candidate They Rejected Before for Coaching Job
The Dallas Cowboys were a late arrival to the NFL's annual head coaching search this season. As a result, Dallas missed their chance to interview candidates like Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn early in the process.
This has forced them to consider others that teams haven't looked at closely this offseason. One such person that fits that bill is Leslie Frazier.
According to Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News, the Cowboys requested an interview with Frazier on Wednesday. Frazier was a candidate to be the Cowboys head coach back in 2010, but Jason Garrett got the job instead.
Cowboys news: Leslie Frazier set to interview for head coaching vacancy
Although Frazier didn't land the Cowboys head coaching job during the 2010 offseason, he did become the Minnesota Vikings head coach that offseason. Frazier earned that role after going 3-3 as interim head coach for the Vikings the season before.
Nevertheless, Frazier's tenure with the Vikings didn't go well, only putting together one winning season in 2012. Frazier ended his time as Vikings head coach with a record of 21-32-1. While that is an atrocious mark, his Vikings never had a great quarterback.
After his dismal in 2013, Frazier became the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive coordinator. In 2014, the Buccaneers ranked 27th in passing yards allowed and 14th in rushing yards allowed. This led to his firing after just one season.
After that, Frazier spent one season with the Baltimore Ravens as their secondary coach. Yet, most NFL fans likely know Frazier's name because he was the Buffalo Bills' defensive coordinator from 2017-2022. During those five seasons, the Bills had a great pass defense, finishing top five in fewest yards allowed three times. That said, their run defense was mostly average, only finishing top ten in the fewest yards allowed once.
This past campaign, Frazier was the Seattle Seahawks' assistant head coach. Clearly, HC Mike MacDonald believed in Frazier's leadership abilities, or he wouldn't have given him that role.
If Frazier becomes a legitimate candidate to be the Cowboy's next head coach, imagine what he will be able to do with the talent on this defense.
