This offseason will be pivotal for the Dallas Cowboys as they try to bounce back from a tough 2024 season that saw them miss the playoffs and finish with a 7-10 record.
New Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer and the rest of Dallas’ front office brass need to upgrade the roster to compete in the tough NFC East in 2025. The first step for the Cowboys is to re-sign a few of their free agents before the new league year kicks off next week.
According to Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News, the Cowboys want to retain punter Bryan Anger and long snapper Trent Sieg, who are unrestricted free agents.

Cowboys Reportedly Want to Re-Sign Bryan Anger & Trent Sieg
Over the last two years, Dallas has had one of the better special teams units in the NFL, thanks to the tutelage of former Cowboys special teams coordinator John Fassel. Brandon Aubrey and KaVontae Turpin get the most praise, but Anger and Sieg have done a tremendous job in their roles.
Anger has spent the last four years in Dallas after playing with the Houston Texans, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Jacksonville Jaguars. Over his four-year tenure with the Cowboys, Anger has been named twice to the Pro Bowl and second-team All-Pro.
This past season in Dallas, the 36-year-old punter averaged 48.5 yards per punt, which is in line with what he’s done with the Cowboys (49 yards per punt). Additionally, Anger only had three touchbacks and 24 punts downed inside the opponent’s 20-yard line.
Meanwhile, Sieg has been with the Cowboys for the last two years after spending the first five seasons with the Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders. Long snappers don’t get much coverage, which is a good thing. It means they are doing their job well.
Sieg signed a one-year contract with the Cowboys in March 2023 after getting waived by the Raiders. The veteran long snapper was cut by Dallas at the end of the preseason but was re-signed two days later.
After the 2023 season, Sieg signed a one-year deal to return to Dallas for the 2024 campaign. Cowboys fans will hope the team can re-sign Anger and Sieg, as they have bigger financial obligations involving Micah Parsons and Osa Odighizuwa to handle.
