The Dallas Cowboys will finish the 2024 season with a losingrecord, failing to meet the organization's standards once again. While this season has been a disappointment, many fans saw this coming with a roster that had lots of holes. As a result, the Cowboys have lots of work to do this offseason to restructure their roster.

That said, before the Cowboys can look to free agency, they have multiple players whose contracts are expiring. These players include defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa, cornerback Jourdan Lewis, defensive end Chauncey Golston, and running back Rico Dowdle. Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones commented on the status of these players last Friday on 105.3 The Fan.

Jones said, “We want them back. They’ve shown that they are Dallas Cowboys football players. They’re certainly guys we want to have back, it’s just making all the calculus work when it comes to fitting everybody under the salary cap,” according to Jon Machota.

Cowboys news: Cowboys are looking to re-sign four contributors this offseason

Each player that Jones mentioned re-signing has been a major part of the Cowboys in 2024. Odighizuwa was a third-round selection by the Cowboys in the 2021 NFL draft and has played great through almost four seasons.

With one game left in the season, Odighizuwa has recorded 44 tackles, four sacks, five tackles for loss, one forced fumble and 22 quarterback hits. Odighizuwa's statistical performance this season is the best of his young career. So, it's no surprise that Jones and the Cowboys organization want to retain Odighizuwa.

Lewis, on the other hand, has been with the Cowboys since 2017, when they drafted him in the third round. In that time, the 29-year-old has recorded 381 tackles, 9.5 sacks, five forced fumbles, nine fumble recoveries, and 10 ten interceptions.

This season, Lewis has recorded 66 tackles, one sack, one forced fumble and one interception. Additionally, Lewis's average depth of target is just 6.7 yards. While that's solid play from a cornerback, Jones admitting they want to bring him back is confusing since he will be 30. The potential money used to sign Lewis could be used to sign a younger cornerback or at a different position.

Like Odighizuwa, Golston was a part of the Cowboys 2021 draft class. However, Golston has made significantly fewer starts than Odighizuwa, starting only 15 games -- 12 of which came this season.

While Golston has fewer starts, he has still played in 63 career games. In those 63 games, Golston has recorded 132 tackles, 7.5 sacks, seven tackles for loss, one interception, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries, and 15 quarterback hits.

This season, Golston has 53 tackles, four sacks, four tackles for loss, one forced fumble, one interception, and six quarterback hits. Though Golston may not have extensive starting experience, he provides good play off the bench, which is why he is valuable to the Cowboys.

Lastly, whether Dowdle deserves an extension is an interesting question. Dallas refusing to bring back previous lead back Tony Pollard allowed Dowdle to return and take over the starting role; now he finds himself in a similar position as Pollard was during this previous offseason.

In 15 games, Dowdle has rushed for 1,007 yards and one touchdown on 213 carries. Though his efficiency at left something to be desired at times, there has been a clear difference in Dowdle's run game over the last month of the season. Jones must think that's enough to bring Dowdle back next season, even if fans don't agree.
