Cowboys Reveal Frustrating Free Agency Plan
The Dallas Cowboys' embarrassing season has two games left on the schedule. This team has been eliminated from playoff contention, owning a 7-8 record going into Week 17.
They made the playoffs for three straight seasons under Mike McCarthy from 2021-2023, winning 12 games in each campaign. That wasn't the case this year, casting some doubt around Mike McCarthy's future. The latest reports hint at the Cowboys bringing him back in 2025 but nothing is confirmed.
Conversations around the offseason have started. The Cowboys will need to make some good acquisitions in free agency but Stephen Jones doesn't sound confident already.
Cowboys News: Stephen Jones Already Sounds Pessimistic
Cowboys EVP Stephen Jones was on 105.3 The Fan this week and was asked about the idea of re-signing pending free agents Osa Odighizuwa, Jourdan Lewis, Chauncey Golston, and Rico Dowdle.
Jones said, "We want them back. They’ve shown that they are Dallas Cowboys football players. They’re certainly guys we want to have back, it’s just making all the calculus work when it comes to fitting everybody under the salary cap", per The Athletic's Jon Machota.
The last sentence in that quote is the one that catches the most attention. Saying it comes down to making everybody fit under the salary cap makes it appear they don't have confidence they'll be able to retain all these guys. Dak Prescott is making $60 million a year, and CeeDee Lamb is the second-highest-paid WR in the league at $34 million annually. They also have a mega extension for Micah Parsons on the horizon.
Dallas has never been the organization that spends a ton of money on free agency. They prefer to build through the draft but you can't always rely on that method. For certain things, you need to spend some coins to bring in and keep quality guys around. The good teams find a way to make things fit under the salary cap.
Last year, Dallas lost multiple key contributors like Tony Pollard, Tyler Biadasz, Dorance Armstrong, Tyron Smith, and Stephon Gilmore. They weren't able to replace all these guys and the product on the field took a dip.
The upcoming offseason is a big one for Dallas, so this kind of answer doesn't instill confidence in the fanbase.
