The Dallas Cowboys are already fighting an uphill battle when it comes to getting back into the NFC East race. Simply judging from last season, it isn't fair to expect Dak Prescott's return to be the only missing piece in the team's return to division relevance. New addition George Pickens must take a step toward stardom, and the defense must be able to take a step forward from last season's regression. Still, even if all of the above happens, it is going to be a fight in what is a loaded division. One that just got a bit more crowded with the Washington Commanders signing former Super Bowl MVP Von Miller.

While the veteran defender might not be the dominating force he once was, this is still a frustrating decision from Dallas' perspective. Miller would've been the perfect final piece in a defense that already has the benefit of Micah Parsons haunting quarterbacks. Having a veteran pass rusher who has been in Micah's position would offer unquestionable benefits. Now, those same benefits will not only be at the Cowboys' disposal but also be working for a hated division rival.

The Cowboys' Path Just Grew Tougher with the Commanders' Addition of Von Miller

Not only did the Cowboys miss out on Miller, but the franchise now has the task of blocking the veteran twice in the 2025 season. The days of dominance might be gone, however, Miller is still more than capable of living up to big moments. Showing flashes of greatness and reminding the league of what he once was.

The Commanders adding the veteran on a one-year deal is a huge win for a team that is a Terry McLaurin extension away from having every reason to believe they can challenge the Eagles for the division title. For Dallas, this is yet another reminder of a front office that seems far too content with making one splashy move this offseason.

Adding Pickens might be a win, but it hasn't been followed up with the needed depth moves and veteran additions. While division rivals continue to hungrily hunt for upgrades, the Cowboys remain content believing Pickens and Dak can solve all the problems facing the franchise. It is a concern that should have Dallas fans cautious about buying into the 2025 season.

No question it should've been Dallas that made this signing, offering an accomplished veteran a chance to end his career with a legendary franchise. Instead, the Cowboys' path to returning to division contention just grew even more difficult.
