The consistent story in the Dallas Cowboys' 2026 offseason has been an effort to rebuild a defense coming off a dumpster fire of a 2025 season. This has included bringing in new options at linebacker with Dee Winters and draft selection Jaishawn Barham expected to help solidify a unit that greatly struggled a season ago. However, there is reason to believe the Cowboys shouldn't stop here with a clear free agency fit remaining in Bobby Wagner.

Wagner is coming off a solid 2025 season, offering 79 tackles and 4.5 sacks to go with a pair of interceptions. While the age (35) is becoming a bit more noticeable with declining speed, the veteran has incredible instincts and leadership that offer any signing team a level of value even at this late stage of Wagner's career.

Signing Wagner for Dallas isn't about adding an elite contributor, but a final piece that helps set the tone. The linebacker is an incredibly respected locker room presence and a potential mentor for the Cowboys' younger defenders. There simply isn't a downside to adding this level of experience and possible production.

If the Cowboys can sell the defender on a lesser role, there is every reason to pull the trigger on the move. If there is one obvious critique left of the Dallas defensive rebuild, it is the need to add the exact type of presence that Wagner would provide. It would give even more reason for fans to buy into the belief that the franchise is turning the corner.

Cowboys Should Complete Defensive Rebuild with Offseason Signing of Bobby Wagner

Wagner played in two Super Bowls with the Seattle Seahawks, understanding what it takes to win at the highest level. This is something that can't be said of much of a Dallas roster that has playoff experience but little success at this level. Add in the possible production over the middle, and there simply isn't a downside to the signing.

It should be well within the Cowboys' price range, with Wagner's age and lack of free agent interest creating an opportunity for a bargain deal. One that would bring in a mentor for Winters and Barham as the Cowboys look to embrace youth at the position.

Considering how much the Cowboys have struggled to develop the position in recent seasons or find reliable defensive answers, it is fair to point out that the franchise could use all possible help. Signing the veteran defender fits the roster you've built while not pushing the team outside its financial comfort zone. For Dallas fans, there is every reason to embrace the decision and believe it will help spark meaningful defensive improvement heading into a pivotal 2026 season.
