The Dallas Cowboys have been making headlines with George Pickens appearing at mandatory minicamp after reasonable concern that he wasn't going to show up. Now, the Cowboys have been making a haul of moves this week, and they just signed a former defensive end from the Las Vegas Raiders.
Per Jordan Schultz, the Cowboys have signed DE Charles Snowden, who racked up 4.5 sacks and eight tackles for loss starting in 18 games.
This is a quiet signing, but it comes amid a string of roster changes this week, and the Cowboys not only get another defensive end but plenty of height up front.
Cowboys sign former Raiders DE Charles Snowden in latest string of roster moves
Snowden is already behind Donovan Ezeiruaku, Malachi Lawrence and Sam Williams on the depth chart. Snowden may only be a piece they may test during training camp and preseason, but sometimes, those training camp battles take us by surprise. For example, Traeshon Holden was a training camp star, but he was well behind the WR room as is, and was only going to make it as a special teams player at best.
Snowden's 6-foot-6 frame could present a threat itself, but for now, it looks like those other three DEs are safe.
Snowden is the latest of moves, after a slew of additions and releases have taken over the spotlight of mandatory minicamp. The Cowboys have already released OL Matt Hennessy, as he was placed on season-ending IR following neck surgery. The Cowboys also released CB Corey Ballentine and WR Romello Brinson.
If the UFL has been trending lately, it's because the Cowboys have already made multiple signings from there.
The biggest name of all is WR Denzel Mims from the Dallas Renegades, who was a former second-round pick from Baylor. After his First-team All-Big 12 season in 2019, Mims hasn't been able to find the light in the NFL, but this may be his last chance to do so with Dallas.
The Cowboys also signed OL Chris Glaser from the Columbus Aviators, another player with some previous NFL history, and former Houston Texans and Houston Gamblers DB Ameer Speed. Per James Larsen at Pro Football Network, Speed joined Houston midway through the UFL season, with five pass breakups (plus 14 tackles) in just five games.
It looked like Jerry Jones was already set with his defense, but honestly, the more the merrier. The real battle will be in training camp and the preseason. Let's see how these guys will challenge themselves to make the 53-man roster.
