The Dallas Cowboys dodged catastrophe on Sunday afternoon by coming away with a 40-37 overtime victory against the New York Giants in a game where their defense, in particular against the pass, was absolutely dreadful.
Despite needing an ill-advised heave by Russell Wilson in the extra frame to allow Dallas the chance to kick a game-winning field goal, the Cowboys made an offense that looked hopeless against the Washington Commanders the week before appear to be a juggernaut.
Letting the Giants QB throw for 450 yards and three touchdowns is no reason to celebrate, yet that is what Donovan Wilson and his teammates were doing on their way back to the locker room after pulling away a win from the jaws of defeat.
Cowboys S Donovan Wilson Pushing Himself Out of a Job with Early Play
Wilson did come down with the interception that set up the game-winning drive. With all due respect to the former Texas A&M standout, the arm punt from New York's starting QB could have been intercepted by a JV high school player. Wilson was able to camp under the ball like it was a pop fly to a center fielder.
What fans were upset about, especially after seeing the clip of Wilson celebrating on his way back to the locker room, was that the safety was burned deep multiple times throughout the afternoon. New York scored on receiving touchdowns from 29 yards out, 32 yards out, and, inexplicably, 48 yards out with just 25 seconds remaining in regulation to briefly put the Giants in front.
After being a non-factor in the season-opening loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, he recorded one assisted tackle on the night. Wilson had plenty of issues throughout Week 2 as he was picked on down the field on multiple occasions.
The Cowboys have already made one signing in hopes of bolstering the defense since their game on Sunday came to an end, with Jerry Jones announcing Jadeveon Clowney is joining the team. If Wilson can't turn this type of play around soon, he could be the next Dallas starter to be replaced.
