Cowboys Urged to Sign Former Rival QB as Dak Prescott's Backup

The Dallas Cowboys could potentially sign one of their NFC East rival's former QBs as Dak Prescott's backup in 2025.

The Dallas Cowboys secured the present of their quarterback room when they signed Dak Prescott to a $240 million contract before the 2024 NFL season. Although no one is questioning who the Cowboys' QB1 will be from now through 2028, who will play behind Prescott this fall is still a mystery.

After all, Cooper Rush and Trey Lance — the Cowboys' second- and third-string QBs from last year — have already left Dallas this offseason. Aside from Prescott, the only other signal-caller on Dallas' roster is Will Grier, who spent most of last season on the practice squad and hasn't started a regular-season game since 2019.

With Grier's lack of proven results potentially leaving a question mark in the QB room, the Cowboys are officially being urged to target another name to be Prescott's backup.

Cowboys Urged to Sign QB Drew Lock as Dak Prescott's Backup

During the annual NFL meetings on Tuesday, ESPN's Todd Archer listed the Cowboys as a potential destination for free-agent QB Drew Lock. The door to potentially signing the former Missouri product reportedly opened when Dallas failed to sign veteran gunslinger Jacoby Brissett last month.

When it comes to available QB2 options, Lock is one of the more proven names among the bunch. The 28-year-old quarterback has played 36 games (28 starts) with three franchises since being drafted 42nd overall by the Denver Broncos in 2019 and most recently spent the 2024 campaign with the NFC East rival New York Giants.

Even though he's never been close to being the best QB in the sport, Lock boasts a decent resume that paints him as a reliable backup option. He's passed for over 6,300 yards and 34 touchdowns with a 78.8 passer rating and likely still has a lot left in the tank, given that he doesn't turn 29 years old until November.

With ex-Giants QB1 Daniel Jones struggling, Lock was forced to start five games last season. He attempted to make the most out of one of the league's worst offensive situations, completing 59.1% of passes for 1,071 yards, six TDs, five interceptions, and a 75.5 passer rating. He even demonstrated decent mobility by converting 18 carries into 133 yards and a pair of scores.

With Grier clearly lacking an on-field resume, Lock is shaping up to be the better backup option — even if he isn't signed yet. The last thing the Cowboys need is to be forced to turn to Grier if Prescott gets hurt, and signing Lock would ensure they remain somewhat competitive in case there's a major injury.

Considering how quickly the QB market is drying up, the Cowboys would be wise to sign Lock before it's too late.
