When Dallas Cowboys offensive guard Tyler Smith plays left guard and opens up holes to run through, he's one of the best in the NFL. He signed a four-year, $96 million extension to become the highest-paid guard in the NFL. It looks like he's going to be a left guard, but don't be surprised to see him play some reps at left tackle during training camp.
Cowboys beat writer Nick Harris posted on 'X' some of the highlights from Jerry Jones' press conference on Tuesday afternoon. One of the topics was Smith and his positioning. He will mostly play LG, but will get some reps at LT, just like Tyler Booker will get reps at center.
The musical chairs conversation starts with Tyler Guyton at left tackle, and how important he's going to be this season. It's still a question, but it sounds like it's just the offensive line rotating and getting reps at different spots before the season starts.
Cowboys will test out different OL positions, but it looks like Tyler Smith will stay at left guard
The All-Pro left guard has said he'll let the coaches handle the positioning groups, but it's clear where Smith wants to play. He's been patient, but he also has been afraid to use his voice in public.
Smith expressed before that he's an All-Pro guard, not a tackle, and he's 100 percent right. He should stay at guard, and it looks like he will.
Guyton has the size to be the future of Dak Prescott's blindside, as he's listed at 6-foot-8 and 325 pounds, but his pass-blocking grade of 50.0 (ranked 81st out of 89) on Pro Football Focus doesn't give some fans hope at all.
Also, he's protecting Prescott. That job is arguably the most valuable on the team. No one is trying to put any heat on the Oklahoma product, but as long as Guyton does his job, Prescott stays on the field.
Concerning Booker, he belongs at right guard, but some center reps aren't bad to get. He finished his 2025 campaign with a grade of 72.0, ranked 16th of 81. Not bad as a rookie, and he's only going to get better.
It feels like Brian Schottenheimer will make the right call and will stick with Smith at left guard, which is exactly where he belongs. There's always some drama during the Cowboys' training camp, but everybody is healthy and off the PUP and NFI. Everybody is signed and secured. The OL positioning may be the only "drama," if anything.
