On Tuesday, the Dallas Cowboys began their offseason transactions by giving defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa a four-year $80 million contract extension. While extending Odighizuwa was a necessary first step, Dallas still has lots of work to do to improve their roster. One of their top needs is at the running back position.

Although Rico Dowdle didn't have a bad 2024, rushing 235 times for 1,079 yards and scoring two touchdowns while averaging 4.6 yards a carry, the Cowboys need someone to pair with him. Over the past few months, many Cowboy fans and analysts have speculated that Dallas could draft Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty at No.12 overall. Others feel that drafting an offensive or defensive lineman would be a better decision.

That said, a recent report suggests Dallas could be considering a different option. According to a recent article by the Athletic, the Cowboys may consider trading back from No.12. This is definitely an interesting choice, given many draft analysts believe the talent at pick 12 is similar to what you can get early in the second round.

Dallas May Look to Trade Back From the 12th Overall Pick in the 2025 Draft

"However, at this point, it feels like the Cowboys would be more content trading back and loading up on more draft picks than taking a player at a position that is remarkably deep in this draft class."

There are two ways to view a potential tradeback. As mentioned above, this draft class lacks many standout prospects. So, trading back and acquiring more picks with a team eager to draft a player could be a smart move.

On the other hand, passing up on the chance to draft Jeanty, who is one of the few blue-chip players in this draft, would be a huge mistake for the Cowboys. Looking back at the history of the Cowboys, they were most successful when they have had a strong rushing attack. For instance, in the mid-90s, they had Emmitt Smith, which resulted in them going to three Super Bowls in a row.

Then, after they drafted Ezekiel Elliott in 2016, they made the playoffs in three of his first six seasons.
Jeanty's ability could have that same effect on Dallas if they drafted him.

Nevertheless, trading back would help Dallas improve their roster even more. Regardless of what they decide to do with the 12th pick, the 2025 draft will be an interesting one for the Cowboys.
